Dear Reader,

I’m sorry to say that the book you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells an unhappy tale about three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune.

In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune, and cold porridge for breakfast.

It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.

With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket

my-review

This is an incredibly adorable series. I’m pretty sure that I have read the first couple books when I was younger but that I never completely finished the series. So when Netflix released the TV series I knew I had to reread them.

What I liked about this book was that it was short and simple yet it kept me interested. Usually with middle grades books I find myself getting bored or disconnected from the story. But with these I was really entertained by it all.

Probably my favorite thing was that Snicket would use larger words and then define them within the story. Since this is a younger audience read I really enjoyed that because then they are learning something new while being entertained.

Overall this isn’t much to say about this book because they are incredibly small but they are great middle grades and I’m excited to see where the rest of the series goes.

I’ve only watched the first episode of the series so far because I’d rather get into the books first – though I’m unsure how far the series goes in accordance to the books; is it first book, first series?

I’ve not read any children’s book either, except for Harry Potter, but I’ve always wanted to try more out. A Series of Unfortunate Events seems like a good place to start.
